Scope

Reporting to the Technical Supervisor, the incumbent performs duties associated with the Department’s graduate and undergraduate teaching and research laboratories, primarily in the area of Biochemistry and good knowledge in the field of Organic Chemistry.

Primary responsibilities

  • Assist the technical operation of teaching laboratories as assigned, including scheduling of experiments, equipment set-ups, and troubleshooting problems as they arise.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory facility equipment and advanced scientific instrumentation; oversees repairs and liaises with vendors.
  • Provide support for training staff, teaching assistants (TAs), faculty, graduate and undergraduate students on the use of standard and specialized scientific instrumentation.
  • Ensure adherence to safety regulations and proper laboratory procedures.
  • Perform evening supervision duties for teaching laboratories as scheduled.
  • Order and prepare materials for assigned laboratories and facilities, ensures scientific equipment/instrumentation is functional and that all supplies are available when required.
  • Assist with lab development, includes researching methods, performing experiments and writing optimal experimental procedures and protocols, as required and for approval, for assigned laboratories, equipment, and facilities in the areas of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry.
  • Participate in the Department’s TA Orientation and Safety Training Programs.
  • Maintain and upgrade the Department’s service support facilities (e,g. water purification, cold rooms, centrifuges, balances, ovens), includes liaising with external suppliers.
  • Assist in the planning of department installations, and in modifications to existing facilities.
  • Assist with tours of laboratory facilities and experiment demonstrations for recruitment and promotion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant discipline and at least two (2) years of associated experience or professional DEC or equivalent and four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with experience with the operation, and maintenance of modern scientific instrumentation together with a strong theoretical and experimental background in Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry and associated instrumentation.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of chemical instrumentation, including: protein purification techniques, UV-VIS, fluorescence, GC, LC-MS, FTIR, NMR, and polarimetry.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory health and safety regulations; includes WHMIS, Controlled Goods and the Chemical Weapons implementation Act.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines; meticulous attention to detail, and an ability to multi-task and to work on various projects concurrently.
  • Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English (level 4) in order to assist/instruct and to write experimental procedures and instructions.
  • Strong technical writing and computer skills; good knowledge of computer-based programs associated with scientific instrumentation.
  • Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities (e.g. maintains laboratory equipment and facilities) attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University’s satisfaction.

Salary

$28.25- $42.47 per hour
