Reporting to the Manager, International Students Office, the incumbent advises international students and alumni, in matters of immigration, health insurance, para-academic issues, and cultural and personal integration.

Primary responsibilities

  • Advise and provide information to international students on immigration, policies & procedures, health insurance, study and work permits as well as para-academic issues. Ensure the Manager is regularly advised of issues and concerns relating to complex cases.
  • Guide students in determining a course of action while taking into account the intercultural context. Advocate on their behalf when necessary, and refer them to other units or individuals when appropriate.
  • Monitor international students whose immigration status or personal situation requires attention.
  • Assess students’ health insurance needs and recommend appropriate plan.
  • Compile and analyze statistics and trends on international issues.
  • Conduct orientation sessions and workshops. At the request of the Manager, develop and organize special projects and programs.
  • Perform other duties in support of the operation of the unit.


  • Bachelor’s degree and two to four years of related work experience.
  • Previous experience working in an academic setting an asset.
  • Certified Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA).
  • Knowledge of immigration laws and regulations applicable to international students and prior experience in dealing with immigration authorities on international student cases an asset.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and spoken French in order to provide information and explanations to students on various subjects and to write reports, projects, and memos. Basic knowledge (Level 3) of written French in order to provide general information. Conversational skills in a third language desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (to create, edit and format documents and presentations).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to deal sensitively with individuals and to give presentations.
  • Experience in dealing compassionately with individuals in sometimes difficult personal situations.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Aptitude to work in a service-oriented environment as both a member of a team and independently.
  • Able to work outside normal operating hours for special events.


$72,783.89 - $86,940.11 per annum
