Katia Gosselin
MFA Student, Photography
My work addresses concerns related to inhabited space, to the transcendence of geometric space from the angle of the vernacular, the symbolic, the ceremonial, the sacred and fantasy. I seek objects and places that suggest a presence (sometimes concrete, sometimes indefinable), and a transformation or appropriation of spaces, generating potential parallel life. My research focuses on the photographic act and the inconvenience, so that the photographs are never lenitive. The set shows a labyrinthine and unfinished set of tracks where people are invited to find clues to form a coherent story, but where nothing is ultimately solved.
Since 2009, my work has been exhibited in numerous national and international exhibitions and is part of private collections in Canada and Belgium. During these years, I received support from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council and merit scholarships from several foundations. My recent exhibitions includes the series Espaces périphériques at the Centre VU (2017) and True Stories (géologie de la mélancolie) at Skol (2018). I have also published several books combining text and photographs, including Entre Havre-de-paix and L’Avenir, Rawnessness and Stay in touch. My work can also be seen in the journals of IndeKeuken (Belgium), YYY3 (Finland), and in Ciel variable (CV108, Quebec).
