Victor Arroyo is a video artist working with documentary, installation and video art. Born in Mexico in 1977, and based in Montréal, Canada.
He produces ethnographic works constituted through visual, acoustic, performative, and other forms of experience-based knowledge that escape the realm of traditional ethnography, resulting from long-term investigations and interventions on landscape and the social relations and tensions unfolding on site. His work intersects community-based research with site-specific practices, exploring the possibilities laying dormant between ethnographic research, academic writing and artistic practice.
Arroyo is interested in material culture, landscape and identity seen through the lenses of postcolonialism, critical theory and postmodern geography. Often, his artistic practice sits at the crossroad between cultural anthropology, documentary filmmaking, and community collaboration.
His work has been exhibited most recently at The Canadian Centre for Architecture, Cinémathèque Québécoise, Sheffield International Documentary Festival, RIDM Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal, Santa Fe International New Media Festival, among many others. Currently, a Faculty of Fine Arts Fellow in the Humanities Doctoral Program in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture at Concordia University.
