Position description

Limited-term appointment (LTA) positions at Concordia University are full-time faculty positions of between 9.5- and 12-month duration. (The annual salary is pro-rated in the case of shorter contracts.) The incumbent is responsible for teaching six (in the case of a 9.5-month contract) or seven three-credit courses per year, and for some administrative and other service roles within the academic unit. Up to two subsequent 12-month appointments may be possible, subject to satisfactory job performance, academic unit need, and budgetary approval. The Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in the Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for one LTA position in Film Production at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses (which may include multiple sections of the same course) on topics including image (cinematography), montage, sound, and core filmmaking practices while supporting student work that covers a broad range of genres and interests within the context of Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts.

Qualifications and assets

We are seeking candidates with a completed MFA degree and who have an established artistic filmmaking and exhibition practice. A knowledge of film theory across all genres is required. Preferred candidates will have post-secondary teaching experience specifically in studio-based courses, and in which they have guided students through the creative process from the concept stage to a finished film project. Specific knowledge of the digital workflow on Apple computers, including Avid Media Composer and Pro-Tools is required as is proficiency in post-production workflow management as well as research expertise in image editing and sound editing. Portfolios must reflect a thorough understanding of the above competencies. Familiarity with emerging trends in media production and exhibition are an asset as well as proven ability to work in a team. A commitment to researching and teaching themes relevant to filmmaking from the perspective of Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities and cultures is an asset. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in French is a considerable strength allowing students to submit work in French.
