Younes Medkour

Younes Medkour, PhD candidate in Biology and public scholar, published another opinion piece in The Montreal Gazette.

In this op-ed, Medkour discusses the potential benefits of the trending 10 Year Challenge which range from enhancing security in vulnerable areas like airports, subways and high schools to locating missing children and even raising our awareness on aging. As a researcher on aging, he is convinced that the social media initiative could end up generating funds for research on aging just like the ALS ice-bucket challenge did for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

“The ALS ice-bucket challenge became so popular that influencers like Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos participated,” Medkour writes.

“It raised nearly $115 million, of which two-thirds were invested in research to treat this disease. Since then, many clinical trials have been approved and are underway.”
