As an Italian-Canadian, Sabrina Mercuri, BA (human rels. & Ital.) 05, is not new to international travel. But this year, she and her partner, Concordia student Nic La Monaca, pushed themselves to their limits to compete in season three of The Amazing Race Canada.

The couple is one of 12 duos racing around the world for the largest prize in Canadian television history: $250,000, two Chevrolet Colorado trucks, free gasoline for life and free flights for a year.

So far, the show has taken them to Quebec and Toronto as well as Chile and Argentina. Their multilingual talents have played a part in getting them to the third episode, but it was their mental fortitude that has helped the most during the race.

“I compared it to the last day of school, where you have 20 exams and the professors tell you, ‘Okay, you have to write them all at the same time,’” she says. “That’s the amount of stress you have.”

Filmed in May, the pair is back in Montreal now and excited to share the experience with friends and family — something they couldn’t do when making up excuses for their five-week absences during filming.

“It was very difficult not to tell anyone. We weren’t allowed to say anything until we were announced on Canada AM on June 16,” says Mercuri. “We had to have a cover story.”

Sabrina Mercuri and Nic Lamonaca Mercuri says she never thought they would have been picked to travel coast to coast for the show. “As Canadian as we already were, we’re now even more proud to be Canadian.”

As a fan of the American version of the show, Mercuri was excited when its Canadian counterpart was created in 2013. After their last-minute video application got them chosen for the show, they got to work getting ready for the race.

“We prepared by re-watching as many episodes as possible from the various seasons to figure out where can we save time,” she says. “By the time we found out we were going to be on the show we didn’t actually have a lot of time to prepare much more.”

One challenging aspect of the race was the restrictions on what participants could take along with them.

“We wished we would have had a GPS or a telephone with Wi-Fi to research whatever we could, but then it wouldn’t have been a race,” she says. “The whole point is really to be as strategic as possible.”

The current season has nine more teams to eliminate before a winner emerges.

As for their future plans, La Monaca hopes to finish his political science studies next spring and Mercuri has returned to Concordia. She’s enrolled in the John Molson School of Business graduate certificate in business administration.

Mercuri is clear the experience was life-changing. “Nothing could prepare you for this race physically and mentally,” she says. “It was loads of fun and really pushed us to our limit.”
