New arts support for Concordia and UQAM

Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation donates $600,000 for fellowships in contemporary arts

Claudine and Stephen Bronfman have renewed their support of emerging artists through the Bronfman Fellowship program. Through a combined donation of $600,000 their foundation will support top graduating students from Concordia University and Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) as they transition from students to professional artists.

The program, introduced in 2010, enhances two of Canada’s premier fine arts faculties. 

Support over five years for the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowships in Contemporary Arts will allow award recipients to develop their professional practice and networks, broaden their teaching experience, undertake exhibitions and further their research. Two-year fellowships will be granted to 10 emerging artists.

Two awards will be granted annually to a graduating Masters in Fine Arts student in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia and in the Faculty of Arts at UQAM.

Stephen Bronfman is Executive Chairman of Claridge Inc. and co-chair of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation.

“We are very proud of our fellows and have had the pleasure of visiting the previous winners in many different venues including their studios, gallery exhibitions, shows as part of international exchanges, live performances and showings at art fairs,” he says.

“Our laureates have travelled extensively, have enjoyed residencies locally and abroad and have received much professional recognition by the established art world. Their works have been purchased by corporate and public collections and reviewed in art journals.”

To date, 10 extraordinary young artists have received Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowships in Contemporary Arts.

Concordia Faculty of Fine Arts student Brendan Flanagan and UQAM Faculty of Arts student Marie Dauverné are the recipients of the 2014-15 Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowships in Contemporary Arts valued at $55,000 each.

The Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation’s renewed support continues to nurture the vitality of Montreal as a hub of contemporary art.

“These fellowships simultaneously create a network of cultural ambassadors and working artists who support each other as they develop their creative practice and flourish on the national and international stage,” says Concordia Faculty of Fine Arts Dean Catherine Wild.

The fellowships reaffirm that fine arts faculties act as creative incubators enriching Montreal’s contemporary arts scene and raising the profile of Quebec and Canadian artists. “By reinforcing the collaboration between two of the most important faculties of fine arts in North America, the fellowship program confirms Montreal’s position as an educational centre for the next generation of contemporary artists in Canada,” says UQAM Faculty of Arts Dean Louise Poissant.
