Shuffle 2021

Concordia’s Shuffle 32 closing ceremony is just over one week away — do you need a final boost to meet your fundraising goal?

Get some easy-to-follow tips and tricks from veteran Shufflers to help you meet, or even surpass, your goals.

Focus on a cause that is meaningful to you

Finding the right university cause to support is a key step in your Shuffle journey. If it is means something to you, it is more likely to resonate with your friends, family and colleagues, too.

Tristan Khaner, MA 15 Tristan Khaner, MA 15, shuffling for CU at the Top.

“This year, my partner Helen and I are fundraising for the Otsenhákta Student Centre, a critical hub where Indigenous students can find support, resources and community. We want our daughter to grow up in a world where Concordia has played a meaningful role in reconciliation and we believe this centre is a great place to start.”

Tip: You might discover the right cause by simply visiting the Concordia Shuffle website, where you’ll find hundreds of Concordians and dozens of teams, all Shuffling for great reasons.

Create or join a team to amplify your fundraising

One of the best ways to elevate your Shuffle game is through team fundraising. By joining forces with colleagues, friends, students and family, you can leverage your collective skills and networks to take your fundraising efforts to the next level.

Les Lawton, walking in the Shuffle Les Lawton, former coach of the Stingers women’s hockey team, shuffling for the Women’s Hockey All-stars.

“For the past few Shuffles, I participated as an individual and raised thousands of dollars to grow an award to support members of the Stingers women’s hockey team. To take my fundraising to the next level, I created the Women’s Hockey All Stars Shuffle team, and members of the women’s hockey team will be fundraising alongside me for Shuffle 32!”

Tip 1: Share the load — divide your team’s fundraising efforts based on individual skills and preferences. If a team member is less comfortable fundraising, perhaps they can help craft messages for social media or focus on recruiting new team members.

Tip 2: Get together with your team, following public health guidelines, and create your own Shuffle. Take a walk around Montreal, cycle together along one of city’s many scenic bike paths — and get creative. Share your photos on social media using #CUshuffle or send them to shuffle@concordia.ca.

Make the ask and be social

Using social media to get the message out to your networks is an effective way of raising awareness and garnering support for your cause.

Christine White Christine White, shuffling for the Black Perspectives Office.

“I’m Shuffling for the Black Perspectives Office because I see the much needed initiatives that come from our office and how much it benefits our Black students. My fundraising tips? Create exposure by posting on social media and ask your friends to share to increase your reach. Never be afraid to ask for donations (and follow up if you don’t hear back) — it’s for a good cause!”

Tip: While posting on social media is a great way to get your message out, following up with individuals is an important next step. Don’t be afraid to email, message or ask a friend or colleague directly.

Hold (virtual) fundraising events; pledge to match donations

Fundraising events and contests can be a fun way to generate interest and donations. From bake sales and social media contests to free Zumba classes for donors, there are countless activities you can use to encourage donations.

Kathleen Perry Kathleen Perry, shuffling for the Faculty of Fine Arts.

“Fundraising events are a great way to encourage donations. I offered everyone who sponsored me a free virtual Zumba class, led by instructors who generously volunteered their time. I also pledged to match donations up to a maximum of $500. Thanks to my supporters, I’ve already raise more than my initial $1,600 goal!” Kathleen Perry

Tip: Do you know an artist, baker or accountant? Ask them to offer their services as a prize for those who donate to your Shuffle cause.

If you haven’t yet registered for Shuffle, it’s not too late!

All gifts to the Shuffle count towards the Campaign for Concordia: Next-Gen. Now, which supports the university’s nine strategic directions and ensures a bright future for both our students and our university.
