Concordia Campus Security launches a new protocol to safeguard unattended items

The campaign aims to prevent theft of your valuable items like laptops, wallets and cellphones

As finals begin, now is not the time to lose your computer. With that in mind, Concordia’s Campus Security team will begin to use a new protocol across campus beginning on December 1 to protect all belongings left unattended.

In short, if you leave any item unattended for longer than 15 minutes, it could be taken by a member of Campus Security to the nearest security desk for safekeeping. This includes items left unattended in libraries.

Security agents will leave a postcard in place of the confiscated item with pick-up instructions.

“It only takes a few seconds to have a laptop stolen,” says Justin Reid, Concordia’s manager of Campus Security.

“The time it takes to go to the washroom — or to even shut your eyes for a quick rest — is more than enough to lose everything.”

The reasoning behind launching this new protocol, explains Reid, is that leaving items unattended encourages theft on our campuses.

“If security takes your laptop and you need to go pick it up, it’s an inconvenience but it’s better than the devastation of having everything stolen.”

Keep your valuables in sight

While Campus Security has your back, it’s still important to be aware of your surroundings and always watch your belongings.

Don’t leave your bag or purse on the back of your chair, the floor or the seat beside you. If you turn around for one second, it could be gone.

Likewise, if you need to step away to chat on the phone, bring your valuables with you. Don’t rely on strangers to watch your belongings — they may be distracted by their own studying.

Carry only what you need

Are you walking around with an over-stuffed wallet containing several credit cards and IDs? Do you have your cellphone, tablet and laptop in your bag?

Don’t put all your belongings at risk. Carry only what is necessary: your Concordia ID, health card, bank card, OPUS card, some cash, your laptop and your books.

Trust your instincts

Be cautious and take note of the people around you. Concordia security agents patrol the campus regularly but they can’t be everywhere at once.

Prevention begins first and foremost with you. It’s important to be vigilant — theft prevention is everyone’s business.
