Good news! Concordia Library is now allowing students to reserve single-seat study spaces at the Webster Library on Sir George Williams Campus and Vanier Library on Loyola Campus.

This space is intended as an emergency service for students who don’t have an adequate study environment at home. It can also be reserved by those who have come to campus for in-person course activities and need to attend online classes before returning home.

As a pilot project, there are 125 spaces available for reservation at Webster Library and 50 at Vanier. More space could be made available in the coming months if the university deems it safe to do so.

“I am happy that the library is opening its doors at a limited capacity as we start the fall term,” says Guylaine Beaudry, vice-provost of digital strategy and university librarian. “This service, in addition to the many online services that we have been providing since the closure of the university’s campuses, is an important step in our continued support of students’ academic success.”

Accessing study areas at the library

Each library site is accessible via one entrance. The Webster Library is accessible from the Mackay Street entrance to the J.W. McConnell (LB) Building. Access to the Vanier Library (VL) is through the main library entrance to the VL Building.

Students are able to reserve a study space for a three-and-a-half-hour block Mondays through Fridays, from either 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will become available later in the term, health and safety conditions permitting. Individual study spaces can be reserved through the library’s online booking system.

Using the library this fall

Students will be able to book up to four study periods per week and can book up to seven days in advance and up to 30 minutes after the block starts. If plans change, students should cancel their reservation to free the space up for others by using the link in the confirmation email they receive.

The reserved study areas can only be used by one student at a time, so no group studying is permitted. However, students who wish to reserve a private space — for Zoom calls, for example — may reserve a group study room for individual use. Students are required to wear a mask for the duration of their time inside the library — no exceptions will be granted.

For health and safety reasons, certain services and equipment are not accessible in the libraries, such as printer/photocopier/scanners, shared computers, the Technology Sandbox and print collections.

There are printing, scanning and photocopying services available on the ground floor of the LB Building (LB-1) and outside the Vanier Library in the atrium adjacent to the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall (VL-1).

Students accessing library study areas are welcome to bring their own devices and headphones. Electrical outlets are available.

The Concordia Library’s contactless book pickup service will continue to be available on LB-1 and VL-1. There are other services that remain available, such as the article/chapter scan and deliver service, interlibrary loans service and online course reserves.
