Top student football players vie for a spot in the pros

Some of eastern Canada’s top university football players came to Concordia’s Loyola Campus Wednesday to test their mettle in the Canadian Football League’s regional combine.
“We can be proud the CFL came back for a second year in a row. It’s an important relationship for us, ” says Patrick Boivin, director of Recreation and Athletics. “It’s a testament to our personnel — how they go above and beyond to assist with the event — and reflects positively on our facilities.”
The athletes began the day-long series of tests and measurements in Concordia’s gymnasium, later moving out to the Stinger Dome.
Forty-nine players were invited to the combine, including four Stingers: defensive back Jovan Deschenes-Cober, receiver Jamal Henry, receiver Shayne Stinson and kicker Keegan Treloar.
Fourth-year receiver Shayne Stinson was one of four Stingers players to take part in the regional combine.
CFL scouts from across the country — including four representing the hometown Montreal Alouettes — were on hand to watch the event, along with media from across the province. Everyone was evaluating the young football talent to see who might be ready to make the jump to the CFL next year.
The next group of stars to join the professional ranks will be selected when the CFL holds its annual draft on May 11.
