Men’s rugby team — the Used Book Fair’s go-to cleanup crew

For the 4th year, the Stingers stored boxes of leftover books in lieu of practice

Men’s rugby head coach Clive Gibson saw the request as an opportunity for his team to make a contribution to a program that directly benefits students.

It took the team exactly 33 minutes to store the books left over from the sale. All in all, 14 palettes were filled, each containing approximately 35 to 40 boxes.

All of the books sold — including cookbooks, textbooks and art books, to name a few — had been donated.

The rugby team weren’t the only ones to make this year’s edition of the Book Fair successful. Organizer Susan Hawke credits Distribution Services, Custodial Services, the Bookstore, the International Students’ Office, the LIVE Centre, Security, Conference Services, Athletics, the Office of the Vice-President Services Communications, and Advancement and Alumni Relations for their part in organizing the event.

Gibson says his teams’ involvement is “a small thank-you to the thousands of students at Concordia who make the Stingers experience special for the athletes involved.”

Says Gibson: “I am a big believer in having the boys understand just how privileged they are to be part of a program such as the Stingers, and as such believe that they should jump at any opportunity to give back to the community.”

The Concordia Used Book Fair celebrated its 18th year on October 6 and 7, when it sold approximately 1,800 books to eager readers across campus. This year’s sales totalled $9,308, making the running tally of Book Fair sales $149,308.

Proceeds go to the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy’s Student Emergency and Food Fund and the Concordia Used Book Fair Scholarship.

Once the sale is over, however, the volunteers are faced with a dilemma: what to do with the remaining, unsold books?

That’s when Susan Hawke, a librarian at Counselling and Development’s Career Resource Centre, made a request to the Athletic department, asking for help to move the unsold boxes of books.

Men’s rugby head coach Clive Gibson gladly offered his team to help.

Catch the men’s rugby team in their last home game against the Montreal Carabins on Friday November at 7 p.m. at the Concordia Stadium on the Loyola Campus.
