The fifth edition of Wellness Week, which is a tradition in the Department of Exercise Science, will take place between March 11 and 14, 2013.

Students in the Department of Exercise Science will offer fitness classes, including yoga, spinning, Zumba, circuit training and more. There will also be 30-minute relaxation massages given by athletic therapy students.

The event will be held on the Loyola Campus in the lower atrium of the Richard J. Renaud Science Complex (SP Building). Participants will have access to a dressing room with a shower. All of the proceeds raised by offering massages and fitness classes will go to this year’s charity, the Lymphedema Association of Quebec (LAQ).

Wellness Week began in the fall of 2010 and has since raised more than $20,000 for various charities including the Canadian Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, the Tony Proudfoot Fund, benefiting the ALS Society of Quebec, Movember Canada (benefiting Prostate Cancer Canada), and most recently, Shinerama (benefiting Cystic Fibrosis Canada).

This year’s beneficiary, the LAQ, was chosen after the president of the association inspired an exercise science class last term with her journey.

Wellness Week will wrap up with a wine and cheese, hosted by the Exercise Science Student Association, on the evening of Thursday, March 14. The get-together, which will take place in the basement of the SP Building, will celebrate the organization of the Wellness Week events with invited staff, students, participants, and volunteers.

Wellness Week is run entirely by student volunteers and it is hoped that this initiative will continue for years to come. Where else can you get quality fitness classes for a great price, while also helping a charity? We look forward to seeing you at our fundraiser and having you help contribute to its success!
