Great offerings in new Learning and Development Calendar

Courses and workshops allow Concordia employees to acquire new skills

Ready to learn a new skill that will help you develop in your career?

The Human Resources Department recently launched the 2013 Learning and Development Calendar, a series of more than 30 workshops and courses that enable employees and managers to learn new professional skills.

First launched in 2011, the calendar offers a wide variety of training sessions specifically geared to either front-line employees, support staff or managers, says Magalie Kanho, senior advisor, of training and development in Concordia’s Human Resources Department.

“These courses help maintain skills and allow employees to acquire new skills that they’re seeking,” says Kanho.

Eight new courses for managers, offered within the Leadership Portfolio, focus on developing managerial and leadership skills, she says.

“We’ve added workshops on managing effective customer service, how to set standards for your team or department, one on the Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders, and others discussing change management and team building,” she says. “Another new one was developed by HR, and focuses on non-academic hiring at Concordia: helping managers identify their hiring needs. And there are also two more  on interview techniques, and on employee onboarding and movement.”

Employees and staff can choose from many returning popular topics, such as communication skills and customer service. A two-hour workshop on stress management developed by Concordia’s Health Services department, which takes place on Tuesday, February 26, looks at how stress affects the body and a variety of effective stress-management strategies. The deadline to register is Tuesday, February 19.

New training sessions include how to build an effective curriculum vitae and how to master successful interview skills.

“There’s also a new course on how to conduct effective meetings and how to prepare an agenda,” adds Kanho.

On March 5 and 6, front line employees can hone their customer service skills during a two-day workshop called Service Focus: Ability to Understand Clients' Needs and Ensure Satisfaction, which explores a relationship-based approach that applies to both internal and external clients.

Courses are offered at no cost to employees. However, space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. A cancellation policy applies.

The Centre for Academic Leadership offers professional development opportunities for academic leaders, including department chairs, college principals, associate deans, associate university librarians, supervisory librarians and program directors, and the Centre for Teaching and Learning Services offers workshops, consultations, orientations and seminars in university teaching for faculty, teaching assistants and graduate students.
