For new and returning Concordia students, navigating the new term after a summer of sun can be challenging — course registration must be finalized, tuition fees must be paid and lazy summer habits must be traded in for a new focus on textbooks, lecture notes and an overall lifestyle conducive to effective studying.

Students need not brave these waters alone: Concordia offers an exceptional array of helpful services for all full- and part-time students who have questions or concerns related to their academic, financial and personal health and well-being.

“I think most students, faculty and staff would be surprised at the breadth of services offered at Concordia University,” says Brad Tucker, associate vice-president of Student and Enrolment Services.

“Most students know that they can get their student ID cards and deal with tuition and fee payments at the Birks Student Service Centre. What they may be less familiar with are the other services that are available such as accessing health services, obtaining assistance to manage their finances, or receiving writing or math support through Student Services.”

Concordia’s Student and Enrolment Services provide continual support related to admission and registration in addition to the distribution of student ID cards and transcripts at the Birks Student Service Centre.

Of course, getting involved in the Concordia community is also an incredibly important and rewarding element of the overall university experience. Trying out for a sports team, volunteering in the city and participating in student clubs are all great ways to meet like-minded students outside of the classroom.

In particular, the Dean of Students Office supports all student clubs and associations, as well as Concordia’s Leadership Initiative and Volunteer Engagement (LIVE) Centre, the Concordia University Student Parents Centre, the Alternative Spring Break program, leadership workshops, and Multi-faith Chaplaincy.

“Our office helps students in all aspects of their university life by supporting student initiatives and engagement,” explains Dean of Students Andrew Woodall. “We know how this university works, and we aim to help students solve their problems and realize their goals. This office is the main supporter of student life on both campuses outside of the classroom.”

Also included in Student Services are Residence Life, the department that runs the student residences on campus, and Financial Aid and Awards, the place to go to apply for financial assistance.

Advocacy and Support Services offers support for students with disabilities, Aboriginal students and international students, as well as an advocate program to help students who come into conflict with the Academic Code.

Concordia also offers exceptional health and counselling services for students, faculty and staff, with a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals who offer clinical care, mental health resources and health promotion services such as a smoking cessation program and weight management.

“If a student perceives that she or he has a need, or if a faculty or staff member perceives a particular need in one of her or his students,” continues Tucker, “it is likely that there is a service that can help. Student and Enrolment Services will be front and centre this year in making its services known across the university.”
