Notice: Obstruction of campus facilities and classrooms

While the majority of university activities have continued relatively unimpeded during ongoing student protests, there has been persistent disruptive activity in a limited number of areas, particularly obstructions of campus facilities and classrooms.

The university remains determined to accommodate the peaceful expression of divergent views within our community; however, it is no longer possible to tolerate further disruption of university activities by a minority of protesters who refuse to respect the rights of others.

Faculty members and staff have the right to carry out their professional duties, and students have the right to attend their classes and pursue their academic activities. Blocking access to the university’s premises constitutes a serious violation of Concordia’s Code of Rights and Responsibilities (the “Code”) and Security Policy.

We have made it clear to the leaders of the Concordia Student Union and the Graduate Students' Association, throughout the protests, that if such activities were to continue, we would be forced to take action to end them. While some complaints have been laid under the Code by individual members of the university, the university administration has so far refrained from laying charges.

As of Monday, March 26, this will no longer be the case: the university administration will begin to lay charges against those who violate these policies. Individual members also retain the right to file a complaint should they believe that their rights under the Code have been violated. Complaints may be sent to protestcomplaints@concordia.ca.  

If your access to classes or facilities, or that of your students, is impeded, or if classes are disrupted, you should immediately contact Security by calling 514-848-3717. Anyone found to be obstructing or blocking access to campus buildings or classrooms will be required to present valid Concordia ID and will be charged as an offender under the Code. Those unable or refusing to identify themselves will be photographed and charged once they have been identified.

It is important to emphasize that we sincerely hope to avoid having to do this. The university respects the freedom of students to public expression and peaceful protest. Nevertheless, we are equally committed to the right of faculty and students to deliver and attend courses, labs and studios, and to have normal access to research and study facilities. We are also committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members – faculty, staff and students alike.
