Winter sports action

Lots of action on the courts and the rink for Concordia Stingers

With plenty of action happening each week on the ice and in the gym, it’s time for Concordia NOW to take a look at how Concordia’s winter sports teams are doing.

Concordia’s men’s basketball team has started the regular season strong, bringing their conference win-loss record to 5-0. Most recently, the Stingers defeated the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) Citadins 68-63. Evens Laroche, a fourth-year forward, was instrumental in the game, scoring 17 points and four rebounds. His athlete-of-the-week performance helped keep the Stingers in first place in the Quebec conference.

The next game is against the Université Laval Rouge-et-Or.

The women’s basketball team is also starting the season on a winning streak. Kaylah Barrett, a second-year guard, was outstanding in Concordia’s 70-53 win over the UQÀM Citadins. She registered a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three assists and two steals in the game.

With 22.6 average points per game this season, Barrett is the leading scorer in Quebec and ranks number two in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) league. The win gives Concordia a perfect 5-0 win-loss record in the Quebec conference.

Hockey

The men’s hockey team heads into the final third of their season with a win-loss record of 10-10.

The Stingers are looking for their first win against the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes who have won the previous three contests this season (all by one goal). The Stingers squad is fresh off a victory over the Royal Military College, and will enjoy home-ice advantage for their next three games.

The women’s hockey team has had some difficulties this season. They head into the weekend match-up against the Université de Montréal Carabins with a win-loss record of 3-9. The Stingers are ready to even the series with their cross-town rivals after November’s heart-breaking 7-1 loss. But head coach Les Lawton has been coaching the Stingers for 30 years, and he knows how to get the team to keep their intensity levels up on the ice.
