Team Concordia is a strong contender in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure Post-Secondary Challenge. The university team’s goal is to raise $10,000. Fundraising efforts have already amassed over $7,000, and a one-of-a-kind event this Thursday evening will very likely put the team over the top.

The event, a DJ showcase and arm wrestling fundraiser, will take place at Bar Blizzarts on Saint-Laurent Blvd. on Thursday, September 22. Concordia DJs are invited to join the growing list of talent behind the turntables.

Meanwhile, arm wrestling champs from the Meta-Hook arm wrestling team will take on any challengers. The team, which includes two Canadian champions, Marc Vachon and Chris Gobby, will donate $5 for every arm wrestler who beats a member of the team. Losers will have to donate $5 to the team’s fundraising efforts. All weight classes and genders are welcome.

“I think we can surpass our fundraising goal easily,” says Concordia co-captain Linton Garner, the community relations coordinator in the Office of the Vice-President, Institutional Relations and Secretary-General. “We’ll have to set a new target of $15,000,” he added.

After initiating the post-secondary challenge in Ontario last year, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation decided to launch a national version for this year’s CIBC Run for the Cure. “We’re pitted against four other Quebec universities and we want to be the top university fundraiser,” Garner explains.

Garner spearheaded the formation of the Concordia team, which currently includes 53 students and staff, after being approached by the organization. “I have had family members affected by the disease, and certainly have friends who have been touched by it as well,” he says. “Otherwise, though, I am motivated by Concordia’s commitment to community engagement and social responsibility.”

The event Thursday night is a precursor to the main fundraising event, The 20th Annual Run for the Cure, a one-kilometer or five-kilometer run or walk, which takes place on October 2. Linton is urging both students and staff to get involved. “Join the team, get more students involved, and I hope we will see a great many people at Bar Blizzarts.”
