In 2003, a group of dedicated volunteers at the John Molson School of Business decided to use their participation in Montreal’s Tour de l’Île bike ride to raise awareness and funds to promote greater understanding between cultures.

Each year since then, students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends have represented their own cultural community as part of the Colors of Concordia (CoC) crew.

In 2010, 375 cyclists and representing 74 different countries participated in the 50-kilometre tour of the island. Identifiable by their T-shirts, the CoC is always the largest single group participating in the event.

The CoC has also established an endowment fund. Each year a Concordia student whose volunteer work encourages intercultural dialogue is given a financial award. In addition, in 2010, the Colors of Concordia Cultural Initiative Fund (CCCIF) was established to financially support such projects.

The most recent project to be supported by the CCCIF was a video produced by Living Together, a project for young leaders from the Jewish and Arab communities in the Montreal borough of Saint Laurent. The CCCIF donated $4,000 to the production, which was launched on May 17.

It’s not too late to get involved and join the Tour de l’Île on June 5 as a member of the CoC team, but please note: registration closes on May 23. To register, visit the CoC website.
