Rugby, wrestling stars shine at awards banquet

Student athletes honoured at annual event to acknowledge extraordinary effort and team spirit.

Rugby player Jackie Tittley and wrestlers Nikita Chicoine and David Tremblay were named the Concordia University Athletes of the Year at an awards gala attended by more than 450 people on April 9.

Tittley and Chicoine were co-winners of the Sally Kemp Award, which is presented to the Concordia Female Athlete of the Year. Both had previously been named Female Athlete of the Year, Tittley in 2010, Chicoine in 2009.

In her third year at Concordia, Tittley helped the women’s rugby team post a 13-1 win-loss record. Tittley was a dominant force in Concordia’s 2010 season. She was the leading scorer in Quebec with 78 points in six games. She was a Quebec conference all-star, the Quebec MVP and for the third straight year was a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all-Canadian.

Wrestlers David Tremblay and Nikita Chicoine were also named Concordia University Athletes of the Year.

Nikita Chicoine won her first gold medal in four appearances at the CIS national wrestling championships held at Lakehead University this past February, winning all three preliminary matches before taking gold. She was named a CIS first team all-Canadian. 

During the university season the Montrealer competed in five tournaments, winning the Concordia, McMaster and University of New Brunswick competitions. She also finished first at the Atlantic/Quebec qualifying event, earning her a berth at the national championship.

David Tremblay, a native of Stoney Point, Ont., won his third consecutive gold medal in the CIS wrestling championship at Lakehead University. He won all three of his preliminary matches, outscoring his opponents 38-7.

Tremblay earned first team CIS all-Canadian honours for his efforts.

Tremblay’s gold medal helped Concordia secure the men’s championship at the national tournament.

Over the course of the year, he won all four tournaments he competed in as a member of the Stingers.

He also represented Concordia and the CIS at the World University Wrestling Championships in Turin, Italy, last October, where he finished 10th overall.
