Together for art and culture

For the second year in a row, Concordia University is a partner in the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA). The 29th edition will take place March 17 through 27.

This collaboration between Concordia University and FIFA reflects a common desire to project the world. Some 20 of the nearly 230 films on the FIFA program will be screened at Concordia’s J.A. DeSève Cinema (Room LB-125, 1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.). The intention is to appeal to Montreal’s various cultural communities and engage the interest and enthusiasm of the university community in works featuring local and international art and artists.

A careful selection of films from the rich and varied programming will be shown at Concordia. These include the festival’s closing film, Matthew Springford’s The Year of Anish Kapoor, about the famous sculptor and architectural artist, whose work appears on the official poster for FIFA 29; and Hollywood Chinese, a film by Arthur Dong, which takes a look at the depiction of Chinese people and the role of Chinese filmmakers in American feature film production.

Not to be missed is Martin Scorsese’s touching tribute to the famous and controversial director Elia Kazan in the film A Letter to Elia, Mark Daniels’ Comic Books Go to War,  and Joann Sfar (Dessins) by Mathieu Amalric. Other films screening at Concordia will be Oliviero Toscani – The Rage of Images, a documentary on the photographer known for his Benetton campaign from directors Peter Scharf and Katja Duregger; as well as The Picture of the Napalm Girl by Marc Wiese.

Also included in the program are films about Chinese painter Liu Xiaodong; multidisciplinary artist William Kentridge; writer and editor Diana Athill; Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist; director Milos Forman; sculptor Izumi Masatoshi; contemporary Chinese painter Zhang Xiaogang; painter Emily Carr; choreographer and dancer Jeff Hall; Dutch painter Ger Lataster and his wife, illustrator and photographer Hermine van Hall; poet T. S. Eliot, and writer and poet Patrick Pearse, to name only a few.
