A new partnership between Concordia and McGill – the first of its kind in North America – will open doors for science graduates and represents an exciting collaboration between the two institutions.

Concordia’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) and the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC ) have partnered to develop a program to provide business training to science graduate students and researchers.

The Graduate Diploma/Certificate in Business Administration (GDBA) program, was inaugurated in 2009 for researchers from across disciplines seeking graduate business training. This new partnership facilitates access to the program for RI MUHC students.

“In this day and age, science graduates with business knowledge can gain a competitive advantage,” says Miguel Burnier, Associate Director, Clinical Research, RI-MUHC, who helped initiate the 2009 program that led to the partnership. “Whether their career path leads them to a job in academia, industry or government, basic business competencies are a valuable asset to complement scientific training.”

The GDBA program was custom-designed to incorporate aspects of marketing, finance and management of human resources and intellectual property. It consists of part-time evening classes taught over the course of one year. Fourteen students are already enrolled for the coming year.

“This initiative between JMSB and the RI MUHC is historic,” says Sanjay Sharma, Dean of the John Molson School of Business. “The JMSB learning experience is rich because of the focus on practical and applied learning. Students in the program will develop business knowledge and skills that are transferable across all industries.”

“The Graduate Diploma/Certificate in Business Administration programs were created to complement the skills of non-commerce students,” says Alan Hochstein, JMSB Associate Dean of Graduate and Diploma Programs and Director of the Graduate Diploma/Certificate in Business Administration. “The partnership between the two institutions reflects that synergy."

"To equip our trainees and professionals with the tools needed to succeed in today's result-oriented environment is one of our preoccupations as a major research and training institution,” says Vassilios Papadopoulos, Director of the Research Institute of the MUHC and Associate Executive Director for Research. “We believe that this program will help us achieve our goals."

The signing ceremony was held at the offices of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre on December 1.
