Thanks in part to a new-found scoring prowess, the Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team is enjoying one of its best starts in more than a decade.

Under the direction of head coach Kevin Figsby, the Stingers have posted a 9-3 win-loss record and are in second place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East Conference standings. They have won all six of their games at home at the Ed Meagher Arena on the Loyola Campus. The team is currently riding a four-game undefeated streak.

Last weekend, Concordia swept a two-game series with the Paladins from Royal Military College. The Stingers won the first game 4-3 in Kingston, Ontario, on Friday night. Two days later on the Loyola Campus, they posted a 6-3 victory.

Part of the success is due to a couple of players who have a nice touch around the net. Charles-Antoine Messier, a second-year centre from Boucherville, Quebec, has collected nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 12 games. He is currently the eighth leading scorer in Canadian university men’s hockey.

His influence was obvious in the two games against RMC on the weekend. He picked up four goals and two assists for six points in the series.

Messier played four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and was drafted by the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks in 2007. He was selected in the fifth round, 145th overall.

The 22-year-old elected to pursue his education and chose Concordia University because of its “good business school.” He is studying Management in the John Molson School of Business and lists being accepted by JMSB as one of the proudest accomplishments of his young life.

Complementing Messier is left wing Alexandre Monahan, also a second-year player with four years of QMJHL experience. The Mascouche, Quebec native has six goals and 12 assists for 18 points in 11 games this season. He has participated in a training camp with the Montreal Canadiens.

Monahan earned awards in the QMJHL for his studies. He is currently an independent student who hopes to pursue a career in Marketing.

Together Messier and Monahan are unstoppable and have played a integral part in the Stingers’ success this fall.

This weekend the team is in Ontario for games against Brock University and University of Ontario Institute of Technology. They return home for a couple of games versus the Lakehead University Thunderwolves November 26-27 before breaking for exams and the holidays.
