Stingers trounce Carabins
In a game filled with turnovers, the opportunistic Concordia Stingers emerged with a 21-14 victory over the Université de Montréal Carabins at CEPSUM Stadium on Friday, October 22.
The No. 6-ranked Carabins turned the ball over three times in the first quarter, giving Concordia great field position and helping set up two touchdowns. A Frank Bruno fumble on a punt return gave the Stingers the ball on Montréal’s five-yard line. Quarterback Terrance Morsink quickly found slotback Liam Mahoney with a 10-yard touchdown pass.
On the subsequent series, Montréal pivot Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze threw an interception to Concordia safety Nicholas Arsenault-Hum. He returned the ball 62 yards to the Carabins’ 37-yard line. From there, Morsink and the Stingers took it the rest of the way with Sanchez Deschamps scoring on a three-yard run.
With the score 16-0, the Stingers had all the points they needed for the victory at the end of the first quarter.
Concordia had a 21-6 lead at halftime on a safety and a Rene Paredes field goal (41 yards).
Final stats show Concordia with 22 first downs and 325 yards of offence. Montréal rolled up 24 first downs and 353 yards of offence.
Each team had five turnovers. Arsenault-Hum hauled in two interceptions for the Stingers. Linebacker Paul Spencer also had an interception. Rookie linebacker Phil Patenaude-Lavallee and rookie halfback Pierre-Olivier Breault recovered Carabins fumbles.
Morsink completed 19 of 36 passes for 206 yards, one major and five interceptions. Montréal’s Julien Hamel was the beneficiary of four of the interceptions.
The Stingers’ win-loss record improves to 4-4. Concordia hosts the 8-0 Université Laval’s Rouge et Or next Saturday, October 30, at 1 p.m.
