A new hub in health research and education will soon open its doors at Concordia University.

The PERFORM Centre – an acronym for Prevention, Evaluation, Rehabilitation and Formation – is set for completion by spring 2011.

Construction of the PERFORM Centre is well under way, thanks to $35 million in support from the provincial and federal governments. At almost 8,000m2 in size, the future site will be connected to Concordia’s existing sports and recreation facilities on the Loyola Campus.

The multi-disciplinary space will bring together researchers from the Department of Exercise Science who specialize in behavioural science, biomechanics, athletic therapy and exercise physiology. The PERFORM Centre will enable Concordia students to study and train at a cutting edge facility and allow its researchers to collaborate with other local or international scientists.

The ultimate goal of the PERFORM Centre is to have a positive impact on the wellbeing of people. “This unique facility will enable us to provide an integrated and comprehensive environment to promote healthier lives through changes in behaviour and lifestyle,” says Robert Kilgour, Chair of the Concordia Department of Exercise Science.

“By integrating advanced research and training with community outreach programs, the PERFORM Centre will equip today’s population with the next generation’s tools to adopt and to maintain healthier lifestyles and a better quality of life,” he continues.

The PERFORM Centre will be unique in Canada. It will combine research labs with therapeutic facilities to assist people with sports injuries or help in the pain management of health problems such as cancer, cardiac or respiratory diseases.

The PERFORM Centre will feature six specialized labs:
•    The Montreal Behavioural Medicine Centre (MBMC)
•    The Cachexia Assessment and Rehabilitation Lab (CARL)
•    The Pulmonary–Rehabilitation Lab (PRL)
•    The Athletic Therapy and Pain Lab (ATPL)
•    The Posture and Movement Laboratory (PML)
•    The Nutrition, Obesity and Metabolism Research Lab (NOM)
