Students and professors at Concordia's Faculty of Fine Arts will be well represented at the FNC Lab of the Festival du nouveau cinéma, a section dedicated to artistic performances, new media and experimental film.

This year's edition of the FNC Lab will run from October 13 to 24, 2010 at the Agora du coeur des sciences de l'UQÀM, (175 President Kennedy Avenue, Métro Place-des-Arts).

Constellation, Oct. 13-14, 2010

Constellation, an interactive display co-designed by Music grad Navid Navab (BFA 2010, Electroacoustic Studies) and Design and Computations Arts alum Jerôme Delapierre (Graduate Certificate 2009, Digital Technology in Design Art) will be on display in front of the Agora du coeur des sciences.

A screen that adapts to its space with projections and sound that interact with street-level spectators, Constellation was created with tensioned strips of white fabric on light temporary structure and solar powered LED lights.

During the day, the installation's surface will act as a shade for spectators while harvesting solar energy. At night, the installation will glow and become a screen for the evening's performance space.

FNC Lab Symposium, Oct. 17 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Chris Salter, Graduate Certificate Program Director and Assistant Professor in the Department of Design and Computation Arts, will offer a master class at the FNC Lab Symposium.

Salter is a Hexagram researcher and founder of the labXmodal, a studio-lab dedicated to the research, development, and creation of performative environments - physical spaces with a focus on dynamic and temporal processes over static objects and representations.

Memorsion
, Oct. 17 at 9 p.m
.

Manuel Chantre, a Montreal digital artist and Music grad (BFA 2005, Electroacoustic Studies) will present Memorsion, an installation of 22 translucent screens.

For the FNC Lab, he offers an immersive performance where a unique urban environment is constructed through familiar projections of cityscapes and audience interactions. Memorsion attempts to create an engaging and engulfing vibe.

Point + Transform, Oct. 19 at 10 p.m.

Current students Philippe Léonard (Cinema, Film Production) and Paul Frigon (Studio Arts, Intermedia/Cyberarts) will offer a performance exploring the relationship between analogue and digital technology, and the use of light in a return to the origins of cinematic practice.

A sewing machine hybridized with a 16-mm projector perforates a strip of film. When projected, the light-filled holes generate sounds digitally. A musical improvised performance incorporating notes, noises, plays of light and screens will also be featured.
