Heart Health

Ask our Experts
Posted on February 15, 2018

The focus on heart health in the month of February goes way beyond the symbolism of Valentine’s Day. According to Health Canada, heart disease is the second leading cause of death in our country.

How can we improve cardiac health and what new developments are researchers uncovering when it comes to the treatment and prevention of heart disease?

Concordia researchers are pursuing more precise measures of monitoring heart health and finding ways of reducing mortality rates linked to heart disease.

Engineering improved cardiac health

Lyes Kadem, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering, is director of the Cardiovascular Fluid Dynamics laboratory. He leads a group of researchers who are developing new models of artificial hearts that allow for more precise tracking of blood blow within the cardiac system. improve the training of doctors and the evaluation of the tools at their disposal. Prof. Kadem work in developing new heart simulators also contributes to improving doctors’ training their ability to evaluate the tools at their disposal.

Would you open your heart to a robot?

Thanks to robotics, today’s surgeons can practice minimally invasive but highly complex operations. A researcher in Concordia’s Tactile Sensors Laboratory, Amir Hooshiar is focused on refining robotic operations so mechanical movements can better simulate manual dexterity. The aim is to have surgeons actually gain a heightened sense of touch while they perform robotics-assisted surgery. Hooshiar’s research team is particularly interested in how heart surgery can benefit from this refinement.
