No energy drinks for children and teens

“Sports drinks are not “nutrient-dense” choices; they provide added sugars and little else. Furthermore, they displace a food choice that could be more “nutrient-dense.”

The assessment of nutritionist Théa Demmers in Concordia’s PERFORM Centre is directly in line with The Canadian Paediatric Society’s views on energy or sports drinks. The professional organization has released a statement warning of the health risks to children and teens of consuming sports or energy drinks. It also calls for a halt to marketing that targets young consumers.

Demmers an offer suggestions of healthy alternatives for supporting athletic performance and optimal growth in kids and teens.
