Brazilian president Michel Temer appears to be clinging to power in spite of allegations of bribery that have plunged his approval rating down to just five percent and led to calls for his impeachment.

Meanwhile, several world leaders are condemning the nighttime arrests of the leaders of the two opposition parties following last weekend’s vote that swept socialist leader Nicolas Maduro to power amid widespread charges of voter fraud. Jean-François Mayer is keeping a close watch on these developments as his research deals with social movements, labor politics and state-society relations in Latin America
