Celebrating Montreal's Black history
Posted on April 19, 2017

Two Concordia students, Teejay Bhalla and Summit Ollivierre, were featured guests on Global's 'Focus Montreal' for a discussion of the Concordia History 388 course, "Telling Stories," taught by Steven High of the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Science. High's students were given access to archives from Montreal’s Negro Community Centre (NCC) for a class research project. Bhalla and Ollivierre also touched on a free public event, on April 11, showcasing the NCC archive. The History 388 course and the NCC archive presentation were also the topic of discussion in an appearance on CBC Radio's 'Daybreak' by Ollivierre (no link available).

The Montreal Gazette also featured a story about the History 388 course. The Concordians quoted include High and students Teejay Bhalla and Summit Ollivierre.

The April 11 event showcasing the NCC archive was previewed on CBC Television's 6 pm news, starting at the 28:20 mark. The CBC Television 11pm newscast closed with a short video montage from the event, at the Universal Negro Improvement Association Liberty Hall.

The research project was also discussed on CBC Radio's 'Homerun', (no link available), in an interview with Concordia Library special collections archivist Alexandra Mills, who collaborated on the project, and History 388 student Megan Ennenberg. Another student, Maureen Cant, is quoted and History 388 professor Steven High, who initiated the project, is referenced in a CBC.ca text version of the story, reprised by Yahoo! News
