FBI returns seventeenth century Nazi-Looted painting to Max Stern heirs

There is extensive domestic and international news coverage of the return to the heirs of art dealer Max Stern of the 17th-century painting, “Young Man As Bacchus”, by Dutch painter Jan Franse Verzijl. The heirs, Concordia, McGill and Hebrew University, Jerusalem, are represented by the Max and Iris Stern Foundation and the Max Stern Art Restitution project, whose leader, senior director of Urban and Cultural Affairs Clarence Epstein, is quoted extensively in much of the news coverage. “Young Man As Bacchus” is among the estimated hundreds of thousands of pieces of art looted by the Nazis during the Second World War, with about 400 works still missing.
