James Saya Bursary Awards Announced

James Saya taught technique in the 1990s in the Contemporary Dance department. True to his personality, he challenged his students to develop their potential and find pleasure in doing so. He was a trusting, generous, witty friend. James was a wonderful, versatile performer with an appetite for life and learning. Unfortunately, AIDS shortened his life. The bursary is given out to a 2nd or 3rd year student who has shown consistent progress in technique, creative projects, and who contributes to building a positive environment. The bursary is given on the basis of merit. Congratulations to this year's two recipients.

Laura Jeffery

"I’d like to extend a very warm thank you to the Saya family. It is such an honour to receive this award and feel part of the James Saya legacy. Thank you to the Contemporary Dance Department for providing space and time for me to work and play with movement alongside such inspiring classmates and professors."

Rameez Karim

"It gives me immense pleasure to receive the James Saya award. This award to me symbolizes strength, perseverance and determination. It symbolises artistic curiosity and opportunities to learn. Receiving this recognition during COVID-19 has made it so much more meaningful for me. It's also a reminder to keep pushing and reaching for your goals."
