Internationally-renown music therapist gives workshops at Concordia


Internationally-renown music therapist Benedikte Scheiby came to Concordia to give a workshop and presentation on analytical music therapy. Held on October 14-16, 2017, both events were co-sponsored by the Creative Arts Therapies department and the Association québécoise de musicothérapie. Among those attending were Concordia Music Therapy students, alumni and faculty.

About Benedikte Scheiby, MA, MMEd, DPMT, CMT, LCAT, AMT, MBSR

Benedikte holds a Masters degree in Music Therapy from Herdecke University, Germany, a Masters in Music Education from Copenhagen University, Denmark, is certified music therapist and Bioenergetic body psychotherapist. She is a Licensed Creative Arts Music Psychotherapist in New York State. She was trained by the music therapist pioneer Mary Priestley (London) in Analytical Music Therapy (AMT) and has been practicing Analytical Music Therapy for 36 years with a broad range of population in a psychiatric and a medical context. She has been holding jobs as professor for 31 years in academic settings: Aalborg University in Denmark (tenured professor, 10 years), New York University in U.S.A. (Adjunct Professor 25 years), Hochschule fur Musik und Kunst in Germany (Adjunct Professor 5 years), Pratt Institute (Adjunct Professor, 5 years), at Molloy college (Adjunct Professor), and at State University at NY at New Paltz in U.S.A. (Adjunct Professor). She is the director of postgraduate Analytical Music Therapy Institute since 1994 and also director of training and supervision, senior clinician and researcher at Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (1996-2016). She has held a private practice as AMT music psychotherapist in New York since 1982. Benedikte has received research grants and has published several peer reviewed articles, book chapters, a book, and research and is giving workshops and lectures and trainings nationally and internationally in United States, Canada, Asia, Middle East, Europe and Latin America. Her current research area: Analytical Music Therapy and use of portable brainscanner. Her latest publications are in the area of music psychotherapy and trauma, music psychotherapy and pain management and music psychotherapy supervision.
