2023 Call for The Guido Molinari Foundation Maurice Forget Internship Award

February 6, 2023
|

The Guido Molinari Foundation Maurice Forget Internship Award offers to fund two (2) undergraduate in-course internships valued at $2,500 each, to art history students with an interest in and knowledge of curatorial practices and contemporary art.

The internship will provide undergraduate students in the Department of Art History with an opportunity to either assist art historians with the pre-publication and coordination of a book and research in contemporary art, or assist a curator at an art institution, learning firsthand what it takes to plan and execute an exhibition.

**Students are STRONGLY ADVISED to contact Prof. Steven Stowell to ensure that their internship opportunity suits the criteria of this award BEFORE completing their proposal**. steven.stowell@concordia.ca

Who is eligible to apply?

The internship shall be granted through competition to a full-time or part-time undergraduate student in third-year standing majoring either in Art History, Art History & Studio, or Art History & Film Studies with a minimum CGPA of 3.30 and a demonstrated interest in curatorship. Eligible candidates shall, at the time of application, have fewer than 33 credits remaining in a degree program.

The Internship is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

How does it work?

If eligible for the Award, the student approaches an art institution of their choice to request supervision for an internship rooted in contemporary art and curatorial practices.

The institution must confirm, in writing, their willingness to mentor the intern, and they must confirm the students’ proposed work schedule, as well as their projected responsibilities.

See details below on what items should be included in the completed application.

Within two weeks of the completion of the internship, the student will be required to submit to the Undergraduate Program Director in Art History a three-page report outlining the main activities accomplished during the internship, which should be signed by the workplace supervisor.

Timeframe of the internship:

Ideally, the internship should take place between 1 April - 30 June 2023, but it does not need to be spread over the entire period. Likewise, the internship could begin earlier, or end later. The internship should represent a minimum of 75 and a maximum of 90 hours worked; the student and the internship supervisor can decide upon the number of hours worked per week, but the Department of Art History recommends that if the student is currently taking courses, they should not exceed 7.5 hours per week.

Can this internship be done for course credit?

This internship is separate from ARTH 403, the Art History Internship course. Students completing the Guido Molinari Award internship do not receive university credits. However, students who apply for, but do not receive the Guido Molinari Award can be automatically considered for the ARTH 403 Internship course (unpaid). Please indicate in your application if you would like to be considered for this course.

What do I include in my application?

Please submit a cover letter outlining:

-Your interest in and knowledge of curatorial practices and contemporary art.

-A detailed description of the work responsibilities and a description of the project(s) the student will be working on.

-The dates during which the internship will take place including a proposed work schedule (how many hours per week, where and at what times the work will be conducted).

-An up-to-date CV.

-An unofficial Concordia transcript.

-A letter from your chosen art institution (including full contact info of the supervisor) confirming their willingness to mentor you as an intern in curatorial practices.

If Offered the Award

Students will need to let the Department know of acceptance of the award within five (5) working days. To accept the award, students must also fill out a CSST Industrial Accident Coverage form, as well as obtain private health insurance (available from the Concordia Student Union).

What is the application deadline?

5:00 PM, 15 March 2023.

How do I apply?

To apply please submit ONE pdf file which includes all requested documents via email to art.history@concordia.ca by 5:00 PM, 15 March 2023. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
