Art History: Asian-Canadians in Visual Culture Conference + Workshop

March 4, 2017
|

As Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary, the conference identified this year as being the perfect moment to discuss the representation of Asian Canadians in visual culture.

This event was made possible through the collaborations of the Ethnocultural Art Histories Research Group (EAHR), the Indigenous Art Research Group (IARG), the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, the Department of Art History, and the CANADA 150 Asian Canadians in Visual Culture Project.

With one full day of workshops open to the public scheduled during its second day, the conference invited two keynote speakers: Roland Sintos Coloma, a Filipino diasporic studies scholar, and Deanna Bowen, a Black Canadian artist.

All activities took place in Concordia University’s EV building between March 2-4th, 2017. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the conference covered the media of visual culture, film, journalism, politics, popular culture, and community-based initiatives.
