Gina Cody School professor named as an inaugural Canada Composites Fellow

New fellowship recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the field of composite structures and materials

Suong Van Hoa

Suong Van Hoa, a leading researcher in the field of composite materials, has been named one of the first Canada Composites Fellows by the Canadian Association for Composites Structures and Materials (CACSMA).

The fellowship is a new award that recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the field of composite structures and materials.

Hoa has been a professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering at Concordia's Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science since 1977. He is also the director of the Concordia Centre for Composites.

His research focuses on the design, manufacture, and characterization of advanced composite materials for aerospace and other applications.

Hoa is a pioneer in 4D printing of composites which involves depositing various materials at different positions, each with unique characteristics. However, in 4D printing, these materials undergo distinct reactions when exposed to heat, enabling the creation of complex structures that can transform or adapt in response to environmental changes.

In addition to his research, Professor Hoa is also an active member of the composites community, serving as an editor in chief for the Science and Engineering of Composite Materials journal since 2006.

Hoa founded CACSMA in 1988 and was its president from 1999 to 2014. He was also a member of their Board until 2014. Their best student paper competition awards the winner with a certificate bearing his name.

The formal announcement of the fellowships will be held during the virtual CACSMA Annual General Meeting March 22nd.
