Appointment of Rama Bhat as Associate Dean, Academic Affairs


Rama Bhat begins his appointment as Associate Dean, Academic Affairs, replacing Christopher Trueman, who has begun his term as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

Rama Bhat has been a professor at Concordia University for 33 years. Among his duties at the university, he was the Graduate Program Director of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1988 to 1990 and from 1992 to 1994, the Undergraduate Program Director from 1991 to 1992, and was Chair of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department from 2000 to 2003. Between 1998 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2008, Dr. Bhat served as Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science and served as Vice-Provost, Academic Relations from 2008 to 2011.

He has been appointed a fellow at no less than five institutions, including the Canadian and American Societies for Mechanical Engineering and the Engineering Institute of Canada. He served as the President of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering during 2004-2006. Bhat's research interests include acoustics and vibrations, and he has published 136 refereed journal publications, 160 refereed conference publications and three books.

As Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Bhat assists the Dean with managing the workloads of full-time and part-time faculty members. He supervises the hiring of teaching assistants. He oversees the planning of course offerings by the departments, in collaboration with the Department Chairs and the other Associate Deans. Dr. Bhat chairs the Student Request Committee, which responds to requests from students on academic matters. He works with the Dean and Associate Dean Dr. Zmeureanu on cases arising under the Academic Code of Conduct. He is responsible for Environmental Health and Safety in the Faculty.
