Assessing the recolonization potential of anadromous Atlantic Salmon in the Lake Champlain Tributaries of northern New York State. Working with Dr. Dylan Fraser and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, students snorkeled in different rivers to capture, tag, and release salmon fry. They were studying salmon population recovery in response to waste from a nearby industrial plant. Ramela stated, “To immerse myself in the serene but powerful streams riddled with fascinating fauna and flora had so far been one of the best ways I’ve ever spent my summers.”

Caloric restriction and certain chemical compounds from plants affect aging in the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Students in the lab of Dr. Vladimir Titorenko observe how these treatments affect protein kinases and phosphatases, which are capable of altering the phosphorylation pattern of proteins in mitochondria. The photographer stated, “While an extended lifespan is usually granted under caloric restriction, it was quite fascinating and new to find that plant chemical compounds can exhibit geroprotective effects under non-caloric restriction conditions.”

The winning photos have been enlarged and placed prominently on a wall within the Science College for posterity.

Stop by the Science College and see them on display!
