Funding Opportunities and Awards

Every year, undergraduate and graduate students of the Department of Physics are given honours and awards funded by the faculty and staff and by external donors. Some of the awards are given in our annual Physics Awards Event. In what follows you will find a description of some awards and of our lecture series.

Undergraduate awards

First/Sophomore Year Award, to a student having completed the equivalent of 1 to 2 full-time semesters of a physics program by the end of the current Fall semester. To be eligible, a student must have taken 9 credits of physics program courses in the Fall and be taking 9 credits of physics program courses in the Winter. The winner will be the candidate with the best academic performance in physics program courses since registering in their physics program. Both the physics program GPA and physics program course load will be considered.  $1,500

Second/Junior Year Award, to a student having completed the equivalent of 3 to 4 full-time semesters of a physics program by the end of the current Fall semester. To be eligible, a student must have taken 9 credits of physics program courses in the Fall and be taking 9 credits of physics program courses in the Winter. The winner will be the candidate with the best academic performance in physics program courses in the most recent Winter, Summer, and Fall semesters. Both the physics program GPA and physics program course load will be considered. $1,500

Final/Senior Year Award, to a student having completed the equivalent of 5 or more full-time semesters of a physics program by the end of the current Fall semester. To be eligible, a student must have taken at least 6 credits of physics program courses in the Fall and be taking at least 6 credits of physics program courses in the Winter. The winner will be the candidate with the best academic performance in physics program courses in the most recent Winter, Summer, and Fall semesters. Both the physics program GPA and physics program course load will be considered. A student can only win this award once. $1,500

Physics Undergraduate Summer Research Award

The Concordia Physics Undergraduate Summer Research Award is funded by the faculty and the supervisor of the undergraduate student who has won the award. It mirrors the CUSRA and USRA programs offered by Concordia and NSERC: The student is awarded with the Concordia Physics USRA to do a research internship in the Department during the Summer session. Students that apply to the CUSRA, NSERC USRA, and co-op internships are automatically considered for the Concordia Physics USRA.

The friends of the Department support the following B.Sc. awards for which our students are automatically considered:

Marlene Pring Memorial Scholarship

The Marlene Pring Memorial Scholarship was established following a bequest from Marlene Pring. The scholarship is intended to recognize and reward female full-time students in their second year of studies in the B.Sc. program.

Mukerji & Upreti Memorial B.Sc. Entrance Scholarship

The Dr. Nishith Mukerji and Dr. Gyan Upreti Memorial B.Sc. Entrance Scholarship honours the memory of the two late members of the Department of Physics and is funded by the family and friends of Dr. Mukerji. The award is intended to encourage academic excellence in the field of Physics and is available to newly admitted B.Sc. students.

Taubi W. Landsberger Scholarship in Physics

The Taubi W. Landsberger Scholarship in Physics was established following a gift from Dr. Sheldon Landsberger, an alumnus of our department and now a Professor at a major research university in the USA. This annual entrance scholarship is awarded based on academic merit. All full-time students entering a major, specialization, or honours program in our department are automatically considered. This scholarship is open to both Canadians and international students. The dollar value of the award is approximately, $3,200.

Graduate awards

The friends of the Department support the following graduate awards for which our students are automatically considered:

Lorraine Gosselin Graduate Entrance Awards: Research and Academic Excellence

The Lorraine Gosselin Graduate Entrance Awards are funded by Lorraine Gosselin. The awards aim to support newly admitted graduate students in the Department of Physics with a preference given to female students.

Mostafa Showleh Memorial Laboratory Teaching Award

The Mostafa Showleh Laboratory Teaching Award honours the memory of Mostafa Showleh, a laboratory supervisor who worked for the Department from the early 90s until 2007, and is funded by the family of Mr. Showleh and by faculty and staff members. The award aims to recognize the work done by graduate students as tutors in the Physics laboratories.

Lecture series

The Barry Frank Memorial Lecture Series in Physics

The Barry Frank Memorial Lecture Series in Physics will be held every two years by the Department of Physics in memory of Barry Frank, late Professor of the Department of Physics. Professor Frank was a full-time faculty member at Concordia for over 53 years. He was devoted to the teaching of physics, research in condensed matter theory, and service across Concordia University and at the Dorshei Emet Synagogue. This lecture series acknowledges his significant impact in teaching physics and condensed matter theory. It will host experts in condensed matter physics or another subfield of Physics to give a Colloquium lecture at Concordia University. These lectures will constitute major scientific events where the entire community of the Department of Physics (undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, staff, and faculty) will gather with friends and guests. It will raise the profile of our programs, expose all of our members to cutting-edge research, provide outstanding physics teaching, and develop international research collaborations for our condensed matter researchers.
