The Department of Philosophy is pleased to announce that Nicholas Duguay, BA student pursuing Honours in Philosophy and a Minor in Modern Chinese Language (Mandarin) and Culture, is again among the recipients of a Concordia Undergraduate Student Research Award (CUSRA).

His 2021 summer research project, "Shame and Progressive Human Values," will be supervised by Dr. Jing Hu.

Nicholas Duguay describes his research project:

"I explore the disagreements surrounding shame and track the roots of such disagreements in ethical theories and contribute a theory of shame that accounts for the interaction between self and community. In other words, I contribute an account of shame that reconciles its heteronomous function and individuals' autonomous moral selves, thus proposing a paradigm shift away from an individualistic framework."

Last summer, his CUSRA project "Empathy/Sympathy in Chinese Philosophy" was also supervised by Dr. Hu.

The CUSRA program provides funding to undergraduate students in the fine arts, social sciences, humanities, engineering and computer science, business disciplines, and natural and health sciences. The goal of the awards is to stimulate interest in research, participatory research, or research-creation work that will complement coursework and enhance preparation for graduate studies or research-related careers.
