Announcements

  • MIGS is proud to announce that Wale Adeboye, founder of the West Africa Responsibility to Protect Coalition, has been appointed the institute’s newest Digital Fellow. His work focuses on counterterrorism, the responsibility to protect, and peace negotiations.

 

  • MIGS will be an official partner of the Paris Talks. This year’s theme is “The Future of Conflict” and the event will take place on March 15, 2019 at UNESCO’s headquarters. MIGS’ Executive Director Kyle Matthews will be a featured speaker on the topic of preventing terrorism.
  • MIGS will be an official partner of the Dutch foreign ministry’s annual “Hague Digital Diplomacy Camp” which will be held in Brussels on 7 February.
  • MIGS Democracy Fellow Ahmed Mahloof was appointed Minister of Youth and Sports of the Maldives.
  • MIGS youth fellow Nina Milhaud was selected to do a work placement at Médecins Sans Frontières’ headquarters in Paris as a communication officer.

Upcoming Events

January 30

  • “Crisis Reporting: a discussion with journalist Kareem Shaheen.”  MIGS will host Kareem Shaheen, the former Middle East and Turkey correspondent for The Guardian newspaper. He will discuss his work in covering the Syrian civil war and the failed coup attempt in Turkey. Registration is mandatory.

February 22

  • “Losing the media war to autocrats and terrorists: why liberal media fails where it’s needed most.”  MIGS will host Michael Petrou, MIGS journalist fellow, where he will discuss his research as a 2018 Nieman fellow at Harvard University. Registration is mandatory.

  • MIGS Fellow Naomi Kikoler moderated an event hosted by the US Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., titled “Our Walls Bear Witness: Burma’s Rohingya Still Under Threat.”

December 5

  • Kyle Matthews participated in the “Roundtable: Recommitting to Democracy” hosted by the University of Ottawa.

December 6

  • MIGS, in partnership with the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, hosted Iranian activist, Shaparak Shajarizadeh, where she spoke about “The Struggle for Women’s Rights in Iran.” An interview was published on opencanada.org.

December 9

  • MIGS, in partnership with the Montreal Holocaust Museum, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, hosted a public event to mark the 70th anniversary of the Genocide Convention. The Honourable Allan Rock, former Canadian Minister of Justice and former Canadian Ambassador to the UN, delivered the keynote address. Pictures from this event are on MIGS’ Facebook page.

  • MIGS took part in the City of Montreal's celebration of the United Nations Declaration for Human Rights

  • Kyle Matthews attended a workshop hosted by the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto titled “The Rohingya Crisis – Looking Back to Find a Way Forward.”

December 28

  • The Rohingya Human Rights Network worked alongside MIGS and the University of Ottawa's Human Rights Education Centre to produce a year-end "report card", which measured the Canadian government's performance vis-a-vis the Rohingya crisis.

  • La Presse interviewed Eva Kuper, a guest speaker at MIGS’ December 9 event, about her life as a Holocaust survivor.

  • Allan Rock and Kyle Mathews co-authored an article for The Conversation titled “The World’s Disturbing Inaction as the Genocide Convention Turns 70.” The National Post republished the article.
