MIGS is pleased to announce that Aphrodite Salas has been appointed as the second inaugural John Lemieux Faculty Fellow at the institute. Her fellowship work will focus on preserving freedom of the media and combating misinformation and disinformation in Southeast Europe.

Aphrodite Salas is a visual journalist who has worked across Canada and around the world. She began teaching at Concordia in the department of Political Science and is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Director of the Graduate Diploma Program. Alongside her extensive experience as a journalist, Aphrodite is also a workshop leader and Quebec Trainer for the Journalists for Human Rights Misinformation Project. She is a research associate at the Concordia University Acts of Listening Lab and a member of the Concordia Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism Studies.

In 2019, she was one of the first cohort of journalism trainers for Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) and the Misinformation Project. She has since trained more than 200 students, journalists and civil servants through workshops at Concordia University, the Thessalokini International Media Summer Academy (THISAM) at Aristotle University, and at the Center for European Perspectives in Ljubjana, Slovenia. During the John Lemieux Fellowship year, Aphrodite will begin a series of new collaborations on disinformation with the international organization DCN Global.

Disinformation is a rising challenge to human rights and democracy worldwide. Aphrodite’s fellowship will complement MIGS’ ongoing work on disinformation and other online harms, including the Digital Authoritarianism Index, our work with the OSCE Office of the Representative on Freedom of the Media, and builds on past projects such as the Canadian Coalition to Counter COVID-19 Disinformation and the Canadian Task Force to Combat Online Antisemitism.
