Getting our hands dirty: Experiential learning at LCDS

The Loyola College for Diversity and Sustainability regularly provides hands-on experiential learning opportunities to students through its internship program. Through this program, students do an approved, supervised 120-hour internship at the University or with a non-profit organization outside of the University in the area of Sustainability or Diversity Studies, depending on their program. These students then do some reflective work on their internship experience and get credit through LOYC 420.

This year, 16 students completed approved internships through this program. Internships ranged from helping to develop and manage a community garden catering to Concordia students and local seniors through the mind.heart.mouth community garden project on the Loyola campus (left) to researching and producing educational material on cultural practices among various ethnic groups in Montreal through the local non-profit PAAL (Partageons le monde) to travelling to Bhutan to put together workshops and training material for tourguides on environmental practices with the World Wildlife Fund. These experiences provide students with hands-on learning opportunities and allow them to develop important job skills and connections.
