Virginia Nixon New York City Trip Fund

February 5, 2016

The Liberal Arts College at Concordia University is proud to announce the establishment of the commemorative "Virginia Nixon New York City Trip Fund", named in honour of our beloved teacher, colleague, and friend.

Virginia, who passed away December 9th, 2015 after a long and heroic struggle against cancer, was for thirty years integral to the success of the College's annual New York City cultural trip. The intensive five-day visit was designed to ensure that first-year students in the College’s Art and Music courses would be directly exposed to great works of art and music; it also had, and has, the added bonus of enabling the new students to get to know one another personally and to connect as friends and classmates.

Virginia’s vast art-historical knowledge and deep love of art informed her talks to student groups on ancient, medieval, nineteenth century and modern art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cloisters, the Museum of Modern Art and other major New York museums. After she had developed a specialty in music and began teaching in LAC's Music requirement, she also prepared students for the Metropolitan Opera performance which is a key part of the New York experience.  And Virginia always took interested students on gallery-hopping excursions, sampling outstanding contemporary artists on Madison Ave., in SoHo and other areas.

The "Virginia Nixon New York City Trip Fund" will ensure that her name remains at the forefront of College life and enable LAC to support individual students in financial need, making the Trip possible for them. It will also help defray the overall cost of the Trip itself. This latter is especially important as hotel and travel costs have inexorably risen, concurrent with the current devaluation of the Canadian dollar.

Help us remember Virginia by creating an ongoing Fund ensuring that the invaluable New York City Trip remains an ongoing part of College life.
