Genocide and Improvisation: Listener and Teller

Presented by Concordia University Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies in cooperation with the Museum of Jewish Montreal

The event will take place on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:00 PM at the Museum of Jewish Montreal, 4040 Boul. St-Laurent.  Light refreshments will be served.  This event is sponsored by the Marvin A. Drimer Foundation.

Genocide and Improvisation: Listener and Teller is an intergenerational, interdisciplinary performance-talk, created and performed by son-mother duo, Drs. Daniel and Irene Oore, creatively and critically examining trauma, its transmission, and its transcendence.  This event explores elements in Irene’s book The Listener: In the Shadow of the Holocaust, (2019), from which she and her son Dani will also read and on which they will reflect. Dani will perform music, improvisations, original compositions, soundscapes, and more. Through improvisation they explore vulnerability and risk within these stories. Genocide and Improvisation: Listener and Teller is a conversation, within and across generations, cultures, languages, and disciplines, exploring memory and transcendence.

Daniel is a Postdoctoral Fellow with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation at Memorial University and a Visiting Scholar-Artist at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music. Irene is the Alexander McLeod Chair in Modern Languages and Professor of French Literature at Dalhousie University.
