Looking for a last minute History elective? There's still space in:

Early Modern Atlantic World: Performance and Material Culture

HIST 398 H - Taught by Prof. VK Preston

This course examines performance, display, and material culture in the early modern Atlantic World, ca. 1450-1850. In conversation with guest artists and scholars, we will consider how to engage with difficult histories and traces of the past, particularly beyond written sources towards dance, music, theatre and other movements of the everyday.

The assignments encourage students to examine topics related to object-centered histories, histories of the senses, of the body, of movement, of race, of gender, and circulations of practice, song, and story—and to complete an autonomous project in one of these areas.

This course will focus on films, documentaries, and digital representations as well as work by David Armitage, Heidi Bohaker, Emma Christopher, Alan Corbiere, Elizabeth Maddock Dillon, Laurent Dubois, Meira Goldberg, Allan Greer, Saidiya Hartman, Kathryn Magee Labelle, M. NourbeSe Philip, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Joseph Roach, Diana Taylor, Camille Turner, and Dylan Robinson.

Course participants will be encouraged to spend time in conversation with peers in Zoom rooms and online working groups.
