Opponents of Quebec’s new secularism law will rally in Montreal on Saturday to protest against the new legislation.

Bill 21 prevents new teachers and others in positions of power from wearing religious symbols while at work.

Teachers who are affected by the law, and others who oppose it, will meet outside the Parc métro at 2 p.m.

Speakers will include Quebec philosopher Charles Taylor, teachers, education students and other opponents of the controversial law, which was adopted by the National Assembly last spring.

Organizers say the law targets mostly Muslim women who wear hijabs and comes at a time when Quebec is experiencing a teacher shortage.

Bill 21 includes a grandfather clause that permits teachers already wearing religious symbols to continue to do so, as long as they remain in their current job. If they switch jobs or school boards, they would have to remove the symbol to keep their job.

A group called The Right To Teach for All in Quebec is organizing the rally. The group wants the provincial government to repeal the law.
