Built environment can be understood as an entanglement among a vibrant infrastructure of actors, materials, and stages. We are embedded within broader systems that are mutually informed. Digital spaces and patterns of consumption too inform one another - data collection serves commercial interests, leading to consumer waste. Each system is entangled, complicating questions of culpability in industrialization and consumer culture.

How can our perceptions of materials-as-agential be redefined when focusing on a specific site? How can micro-interventions uncover macro-problems, and our complicitness in them?

–scapes: engaging with the micro and macro entanglements of the anthropocene creates a place for collective practitioner discourse on the invisible material-sites which we encounter (and encounter us) in our everyday. -scapes aims to subvert the socio-cultural narratives of power and structure in Montréal/Tiohtià:ke and beyond. These research-creation projects invite the public to explore these encounters through a variety of sensorial experiences, revealing the remnants of human interaction with cities, plants, food, light, and data.

Projects

Visible Movement (Emily Bain)

Visible Movement maps geographies of insecurities on fabric to explore the experience of travelling on foot through car-centric landscapes.

Subsenses (Andrée Uranga)

Subsenses seeks to use sound and scent as modes of communication to promote an alternative way of understanding the impacts of “low-income” neighborhoods within the Montreal metropolitan area.

gaps/lack (Patrizio Mclelland)

Gaps/Lack uses iterative process as a means to explore our potholes. Through a multiplicity of provocations, gaps/lack situates the pothole (have-not) as a site of memory, distress, disruption, and a launchpad for speculation.

Data_scapes (Sarah Hontoy-Major)

Data_scapes explores individual narratives from personal screen-based data and speculates on consumerist objects shaped by data collection.

Frozen Tracts (Mitchell Lanecki)

Residual proof of our cultural choices contaminate our environment. Capturing and displaying the invisible creates the possibilities of discourse and critical analysis.

Invasive_scapes (Alix Chartier)

Invasive_scapes investigates the material capabilities of Milfoil to dream alternative futures where invasive plants become the primary source of circular and local material development.

Community + Plastic Waste + Funghi  (Joëlle Collin)

Community + plastic waste + funghi is a growing participatory bioremediation project that investigates methods for safely and easily returning domestic polymer-based textile waste back to earth using Mycelium capabilities.

Beyond Digital Landscapes (Manuel Souris)

Beyond Digital Landscapes aims to bridge the gap between the material and the digital using projection design on different metals in the built environment.

Ways of Valuing Residual Food Material  (John Mendoza)

Ways of Valuing Residual Food Material tackles the problem of food waste by reintegrating residual food materials back into the stream of consciousness through culinary modalities.

An (all-time) Glow (Sarah Al Mamoun)

An (all-time) Glow re-examines light pollution as an aesthetically and conceptually-charged poetic mediascape.
