For the 2020 edition of Nuit Blanche, Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership: The Pilimmaksarniq/Pijariuqsarniq Project, in partnership with our 2020 Artist-in-Residence artist Glenn Gear, and 4TH SPACE are presenting a video and audio installation artwork called From the Big Land. Created with Nuit Blanche 2020 and 4TH SPACE’s large street-facing screen in mind, this work will activate the cold, dark February night with color, texture, movement, and sound, captivating and mesmerizing all audiences with imagery that recalls the land, flora and fauna of Nunatsiavut.
The visual component is a looped 3-minute video artwork based on kaleidoscopic forms. These forms are made from imagery of black spruce twigs, blooms of Labrador tea, intricate colored beadwork, and sealskin patterns. This moving and undulating imagery will create an ever-changing background of changing and folding. Archival audio of throat singing will intertwine rhythmically with the undulating kaleidoscopic forms, creating waves of recognizable imagery, which then transform into purely aesthetic forms.
